Dear New and Returning SUSD Families,
Welcome to the Scottsdale Unified School District (SUSD.
A total of 21 of our 31 schools are designated Excelling — Arizona's highest rating. We offer an educational environment that meets the needs of all learners. In our classrooms, students engage in a curriculum designed to help them reach their highest academic potential and personal growth. Our success rests squarely on the shoulders of our outstanding teachers, dedicated administrators and caring support staff.
Here are just a few key points and benefits about Scottsdale Unified School District.
- Specialized programs – International Baccalaureate (IB), Advanced Placement (AP), Gifted programs, Fine Arts programs, Athletics, Special Education and more!
- Outstanding principals and teachers – Elementary Teacher of the Year by the Scottsdale Mayor's Committee on Employment/People with Disabilities Division, Arizona Elementary Science Teacher of the Year, and Scottsdale Sam's Club Teacher of the Year to name a few.
- Top test scores – As much as 30 percent above state averages on AIMS and as much as
43 percent higher on Terra Nova.
- New facilities – Arcadia, Chaparral, Coronado and Saguaro high schools were reconstructed and renovations were made to Desert Mountain High School and Sierra Vista Academy.
I invite you to visit our Web site at www.susd.org . It is a great source for information and news about SUSD—the District calendar, bus and bell schedules and more. You can also connect with us so that you are aware of upcoming events and District news by signing up for our weekly newsletter. Finally, for information specific to your child's school, I encourage you to visit the school Web site.
SUSD schools offer many opportunities for students to get involved—clubs, athletics, arts, music and more. Student involvement enhances the overall experience, so I encourage each student to get involved. I also hope you and your child will attend as many school and District-sponsored events as possible this year. You can also be involved in your school's parent organization. Visit the Web site found under “parents” on the school Web page.
Please consider scheduling a visit with your child's principal, if you haven't already done so. I also welcome you to visit with me during the “office hours” that I will hold at schools this year.
I look forward to hearing about your child's accomplishments as the year progresses. Have a great school year!
Sincerely,
Dr. Gary T. Catalani
